BEDRİ BAYKAM
VISUAL ADVENTURES
(Dimensions + Time)
December 7-30, 2019
Bedri Baykam’s First Los Angeles Solo-Show “Visual Adventures”
at the Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery
Internationally known Turkish artist Bedri Baykam, is having a one man show at the Gloria Delson Contemporary Arts Gallery in downtown Los Angeles, from December 7 to 30th, 2019.
Baykam, a first generation New-Expressionist since the early 80s, evolved his art in various ways, turning into also a “cultural guerilla” struggling for non-western artists’ rights, as well as a multidisciplinary artist involved deeply in political activism and political art.
STRIKING LENTICULAR WORKS: THE 4Ds
Center of attention for his lenticular works (with sometimes up to 20-25 layers of depth) labeled 4Ds (three D + time factor), Baykam will show those fascinating dream-like pieces which were already exhibited in several galleries and museums, for the first time in Los Angeles. Visual Adventures is Baykam’s 141rd solo-show around the world. Besides his 4Ds, Baykam will show some of his canvases done in the last few years. The artist is known for his versatility and keenness for multi-media art as well. The book “Bedri Baykam as Seen by the Critics” (2017, Piramid Publishing) analyzes the artist over long decades, from the eyes of important critics and historians such as Peter Selz, Kim Levin, Robert Morgan, Otto Hahn, Edward Lucie-Smith, Hasan Bülent Kahraman, a.o.
INTRODUCING TO LOS ANGELES: BAYKAM’S “EMPTY FRAME”
Baykam’s “EmptyFrame” had raised a great deal of interest after its initial showing in New York at the Proposition Gallery in 2013, followed by the showings in İstanbul and Ankara. Sold at 150.000 USD the first “EmptyFrame” had raised a real wave of sensation. Several articles from American and Turkish art critics are explaining this intervention from the artist. Baykam had launched this project as an answer to several generation of “ready-mader” artists borrowing that concept from Marcel Duchamp, 100 years after the French artist, just by changing the chosen object of the ready-made. One of the EmptyFrames will be at the LA show.
INTRODUCING “BEDRİ BAYKAM’S ART HISTORY MAP”
Baykam launched his Art History Map in Turkey this year in April; it has raised since then a great deal of interest. Prepared in two sizes (large and medium) as well as two different mediums (numbered and signed canvas editions of 250 and 350 respectively for each of those sizes, and prints on laminated paper) “Bedri Baykam’s Art History Map” accomplishes an important task.
It comprises all the art movements and major (or sometimes lesser known!) artists chosen by Baykam, from Renaissance till today. It also shows all related connections of art movements among artists from different centuries, different decades as well as their simultaneity with all the explorers, philosophers, statesperson, scientists, musicians, filmmakers etc. fom all over the world. Thus, the Map acquires also a world cultural and socio-political dimension as well.
BAYKAM’S RECENT BOOK: “GUERILLA CARRIES NO UMBRELLA”
Baykam is also an accomplished writer who has 29 books published. The latest one “Guerilla Carries No Umbrella” written in English, half about art and the other half about politics, is appearing simultaneously with Baykam’s show at the Gloria Delson Gallery. It comprises the artist’s long struggle for the rights of non-western artists as well as his different artistic analysis’ like his famous “Curatorial Schizophrenia” among others. The political part of the book gives insights about Baykam’s long struggle in his own country for the protection of secularism as a sine-qua-non concept for defending democracy and Atatürk’s ideas (Founder of Turkish Republic).
BAYKAM INSTIGATOR OF “WORLD ART DAY”, NOW AN OFFICIAL DAY MARKED BY UNESCO
Baykam who is the World President of the International Art Associations/IAA (Official Partner of UNESCO) since 2015, is also the instigator of “World Art Day” (April 15, Birthday of Leonardo da Vinci). After Baykam’s proposal in the name of IAA, according to decision of the Executive Board of UNESCO, World Art Day has become now one of the International Days marked officially by UNESCO.
Visual Adventures will be open till Monday, December 30, 2019 at Gloria Delson Gallery.
